| Summary | 0001194: REQ: Transmit archived scene files for network rendering. | ||||||||||||
| Description | In a scene I have now, I have three nearly identical HDR wood textures. Each one is about eleven megabytes. I must transmit all three of them to each render node, and the entire scene (counting the meshes, bumps, etc) totals about 60 megs. Compressing the scene with LZMA brings it down to 14 megs. It'd be much more efficient to transfer 14 megs and decompress it on the other end than transfer 60 uncompressed, especially if the node in question is over a DSL connection. Even a minimum level of compression would be largely beneficial. | ||||||||||||

Just got an idea. Since we use GZIP to compress .flm files, why don't we just pipe all textures through that same GZIP engine before sending them over the network? |

Geometry files -- maybe, but i haven't seen that many JPEG or PNG image files which achieved any decent compression rates. As Lux farms are usually intended to run over LAN, compression will just consume master's CPU resources without any practical benefit. Don't forget that since Lux 1.0 slaves cache resource files, so they get transfered only once until the user clears the cache directory. |

Shouldn't be too hard to have an option for compressed file transfer. |
