Very nice! In particular the headlights look great. I see you've rendered until 6.5 kS/s, that must have taken a while. :)

That turned out great Fax. The composition is very compelling in its own right. I really like the car itself also.

Wow :)

@Abel: Thank you! The headlights were a great example of effort -> reward for me; it took a lot of patience to model them and sometimes it even felt pointless, but as soon as I ran a test render with Lux it was clear that it had been worth the effort. The links below show more details, but I also plan to do another render that puts them more in display. And yes, it took around 40 hours to render on an i7 laptop :P Only CPU though. Also I should have listened to Jensverwiebe on IRC, he told me how instances would slow down the render - I shouldn't have instanced everything, I had some RAM room to trade off. Oh well, lesson learned! :)

@Carbonflux: Thank you very much, I did take my time with composition so I'm glad it does come across and it wasn't just me overthinking it :)

@SATtva: Thank you :) I wish I could have done more for the asphalt but I'm glad to hear it's not that bad!

@B.Y.O.B.: Thank you sir!

@luxRoot: Thank you very much, I hope you like the details about them that I posted above :)

@All, I have a question: over at BlenderArtists a frequent comment I heard was about how the DoF makes the cars look like miniatures. Although F2 was deliberate as I wanted the eyes to stay on the front center car, I can definitely see what they mean, since there's nothing else in the scene apart from the ground to provide a sense of scale. What do you guys think?

I cannot agree with BlenderArtists commentators -- the DoF settings you've used are quite balanced, and many scene details (like very nice asphalt texture and detailed tires pattern) provide a good perception of the scale.

One of the reasons I stopped posting on blender artists is because of the "looks real" meme they have going on there and also the sophomoric nature of the feedback I got there. I have almost never ran into a case where someone on blender artists understood what I was trying to do, they don't parse light flow but rather have a cultural check-list of what is the approved "looks real" standard, this is because imo the community is not used to physical simulation. I am hoping the introduction of Cycles and physical materials will change that pattern for the better.

I can see the point about DoF but only if I admit I am looking at a render, it takes a bit of self-discipline to look at a image and forget its a render and parse it as a photo, this is a form of self-discipline I don't find to be very common in the blender artists CG community and to some extent in the CG community as a whole.

To be totally "biased" I consider this one of the better renders I have seen and a great example of the use of the grid pattern in composition and if I was teaching a design class I would be very tempted to use this as a example of effective advertising design and graphic art.

This render taken as a whole is in the same league as one of SATtva's renders imo, which is close to the highest complement I can pay to any artist as I consider SATtva's renders to be the gold standard for photo-real rendering.

I think so too. The strength of the DoF isn't unrealistic IMO.
I have heard comments like "too strong DoF" on some of my renders, too (particularly the macro shots of course). In such a case I usually just point at the camera settings I used ;) (like F 2.8 and 90mm focal length or so).
