Diamond caustics (with chromatic dispersion)

Postby giuliojiang » Wed Aug 17, 2011 11:35 am

In this very simple scene I wanted to play with Luxrender's chromatic dispersion feature.
I tried various transparent meshes, like icospheres, prisms and some gemstones. Then I chose the most "classic" one.

Icosphere (smoothed), no dispersion

Even though the "dispersion" is enabled, I couldn't really see rainbows... So I added a fresnel texture to diamond's internal volume using Cauchy's equation.
Now the white light splits into rainbow properly, but the rendering is much slower (need a lot of spp to get a clear picture). Both diamond renders have 150spp

I would be very glad if someone could help me render and send me back some flms

Here you go. 700 samples for you... looking forward how this turns out with a few thousand samples.

Btw. Did you see this wiki page about caustics?

Thank you very very much, I'll merge the FLMs and update the result :D

If possible, yes. Now I have 3 ks/p in total, I think with 4-5 ks/p the picture will be almost clear.

ok just because i have them free right now I have 16+ threads chewing on this, a core i7 2600k and a core i7 920, ok also tasked a Phenom II x6 into this. I will bounce out the morning results to this posting.

and this is what I have so far, I started with a resume off the FLM posted at the top of the thread.

thank you filanwizard. If you send me your flm, I'll merge it with mine and I'll have more than 6Ks/p in total. It will be enough and I will post the result in Finished Work.
