How to bumpmap luxrender brick texture

Postby jananton » Thu Jul 14, 2011 7:41 am

Well, it's been a while I did something with Luxrender. I think it was in the blender 2.3x days. ;)

However since then much has changed, so now I'm running blender 2.58a with Luxblend25. As with blender and its new interface, it's a bit of a puzzle to get going again with the new luxblend25. I like how it is integrated in the blender interface, but it makes it a kind of adventure to get help from the 'old' 2.49 tutorials.
The biggest puzzle at the moment seems to be the use of the luxrender buildin procedural textures.
Take for instance the brick texture. I think I figured out I have to use the color version for the teints and the grayscale for the bumpmap settings in the material, but somehow I cannot see any bump in my testrenders. When I try to get smart I get Error 41 and Couldn't get float in texture 'bricks' or something like that when I add the color version to the bumpmap setting, that's why I changed to grayscale that doesn't have this error. But, as said, no luck with that either, so how is this supposed to work?

Bump map texture has to be turned in float type (grayscale) not color.
Also M button has to be activated.

Well, as far as I can fathom that's what I have at the moment, but whatever I try, no bump visible.
Even if I leave the diffuse col texture part off and have only the bump map part in place nothing shows.
Is there maybe a general setting that needs to be enabled to have any bumpmapping at all?
Otherwise it seems to be broken somehow.

Make sure your scene scale is correct -- bump is measured in absolute units (meters by default). Also to see any bump you need a proper lighting setup -- if the surface is lit up front, you'll hardly notice any bump at all.

Now you got me. :)
Scene scale, hmm, I always take a blender cube primitive as beiing 2 x 2 x 2 meters. In other words one blender unit equals one meter. Is this not the assumption with luxrender too, or does it need to be set somewhere ?
As for the light it's indeed from the front, allthough under a 45 degree angle down, but I'll try some other positions as well.

1BU = 1m is right. You can change that in the scene settings, too, if you wish.
