Hi, quick question: On the hybrid cpu/gpu, are multiple GPU's supported? I mean, if I setup LuxRender on a 12-core setup with four Radeon HD 6990s, would it be able to max out all the CPU cores and all eight of the GPUs?

Hi,

Due to the way hybrid works, maxing all CPUs and GPUs will heavily depend on the scene you'll be rendering, but the acceleration core is able to support multiple GPUs.

Cool! This is excellent news indeed. I guess Lux is using the GPUs to accelerate the ray intersections, but nothing else?

Correct, hybrid renderer uses GPU for ray-tri intersections only.
May contain traces of nuts.

I just tried to start luxconsole 64bit linux version in my amazon aws instance and it complains about a missing LibGLU, so I wonder is this linked library really needed for luxconsole?

Usually a single CPU wont be able to feed enough work to the GPU for ray intersections to fully utilize it. Further, Lux only uses one GPU and cannot use multiple GPU cards on the same machine. You will need to use SLG to get multiple GPUs working for you.

Hopefully, this is a temporary limitation.

This is mostly driven by the the memory usage problem LuxRender has with large number of samples. It would be trivial to add the support for multiple devices like SLG hybrid mode has.

For the same reason, LuxRender is using RayBuffers with only 8192 rays while SLG uses 65k rays: this alone increase the overhead LuxRender has to handle by 8 times :!:

Basically, we have to solve some problems related to some old heritage from PBRT (I guess in 0.9).

I propose you get SnowLeo, it´s way cheaper than my time to spend for a 10.5 compliant build ;)
Also it has many advantages in speed + CL capability from scratch.

Otherway you need to compile yourself, i spend lot of time to make the compile as easy as can be.
