automatic installer and new gui test for windows users

Postby Radiance » Tue Jun 10, 2008 11:06 am

Hi all,

I've been working on an automatic installer for luxrender for our v0.5 release this weekend.

The build this installer installs also includes the new wxwidgets GUI ratow is been working on.
This gui is fairly new and not %100 finished/useable yet,
but i'd like to know if it starts/runs on other machines and windows vista etc...

Once you've tested, you can choose the uninstall from the start menu in the 'LuxRender v0.5' group to remove it.

Can some people help me test it ?
It seems to work fine here, but you can never be sure :)

I've got windows XP here so i'd like to know if it works on other windows XP installtions, and other types of windows such as vista and 2000 etc...

please let me know what your experiences are :)

NOTE: this build is'nt suitable for actual use/rendering, just a test :)

download here (3mb): http://www.luxrender.net/terrence/luxinstall.exe

Yeah it works fine here at work (XP 32bit). I can try on Vista 64 this evening. Love the new GUI BTW, very smooth :)

Is there a way to (i know there is, but it's likely to be difficult) automatically download and run the LuxMaya installer if requested ?

Another alternative is to include LuxMaya in the installer (I already have NSIS script for it), but that's likely to increase the download size quite a bit.

EDIT: oh, please get rid of that horrid old-skool gradient background on the installer ;)

Sure,

I think we can include luxmaya too :)

Do you think it will be finished enough by sunday ?
I was thinking of including some information about updates for exporters... (links or something)

There's no doubt that LuxMaya works as it is. There are however 17 issues still in mantis (some of which depend on post 0.5 features) :(

I should think I can probably get displacement mapping working, and I'll have another look at the optimised mesh export module (no promises, I think the Maya python API could be wonky in this area).

Up to you really - can you look at mantis and add some priorities to things you'd like to see done ?

ok, i'll have a look in mantis.

i guess one of the most important things atmo is getting the subdiv objects to work %100 :)

also the default values and updated config presets,
i'll send you the final values for these soon. (was hoping to finish the list tomorrow)

Do you mean Maya subdiv objects or some sort of loopsubdiv output from a polygon mesh ?

The former is unlikely to be ready by sunday, the latter I can hack in if I get the Mesh_opt module working.

installed and uninstalled on Vista 32bit successfully :D

The LuxBlend script haven't found the right directory on my PC... don't know if installer has a chance to locate the real blender installation directory ?

Works fine on Vista 64 here at work. (god, I hate vista - 4GB of ram, and it chugs my hard drive.) UAC is turned off, I'll try testing out the installer with it on to make sure it works.

Works fine on Win 2000 here too.

Kill that 1995 installer era gradient, Terrence :P

Small note: when I opened Lux on the 2000 box, the application icon in the top left of the window was replaced with the windows logo, for some reason.

Also, opening lux on 800x600: the window is too big for the screen by default. Either get the screen rect and resize based on that, or go slightly smaller than 800x600 by default.
