to me is OK to use only one kind of shader for the environment.
what I can't understand is why the 3ds max bitmap shader work for the environment background... but not work if used for mapping the materials. any way.
about the normal issue.... please read this post: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=4534&start=40#p48310
is from a blender user... they have also this problem with some geometries... this could be mean to be more a Luxrender problem.
by the way.. Kel Solaar from http://www.hdrlabs.com would grab an existing template for sibl_Gui to adapt it to Luxrender for max.
but for support sibl_Gui is needed that the "mentalRay Sun or the DirectLight" from max "daylight system" is exported as sun instead as infinite light.
