Network render on iMacs

Postby ackbahr » Tue Sep 28, 2010 2:26 am

Hi!
My school's computer admin graciously offered me to run a night-long render on a 30-computer room (iMac, as the title suggests). BUT he said "as long as you don't burn them". Do you know if there's any chance of them actually overheating and getting damaged with a night-long job? I already tried a 30 minutes render which turned out great, but the offer's quite tempting....
Thanks for your input!

So far thousands of people have run the program and we haven't received any reports of hardware damage using LuxRender. Modern systems can be expected to throttle down CPU speed or even reboot before dangerous heat levels would be reached.

That being said, we don't offer any hardware warranty program so if you're worried about overheating you might want to do a couple of test renders on one computer first.

Thanks Abel, I'll do that.
A few months ago I had posted something about threads. The question was "Do I have to set as many threads as there are cores in the render farm?" and the answer was "no", and even to use only 1 thread on dual core computer client to allow CPU time for dispatching etc. Do you know if I can even take it down to zero threads, as I have quite a lot of servers to deal with (or will it stop the render altogether)?
