*NEW gui development reorganization -> Ratow*

Postby Radiance » Thu May 22, 2008 6:26 am

Hi all,

The GUI development and forum has been lacking in activity for a while.

I have made some attempts to find new developers to take care of this important part of lux,
but haven't had much success yet.
This is my fault as i don't have enough time left to handle this area aswell.

I have my hands full with completing v0.5, then making a new site and helping Abel make sure all the technical details of our new stuff is correctly reflected in the new WIKI/docos.

Since we're currently developing an array of new features which will need interactive controls in the GUI
for them to be used effectiveley, we need to blow the dust of this area and initiate activity.

Therefore i have decided to put one of our engine developers on this to make sure things get done.

It's not easy finding someone with free time at the moment, so i think our 'jack-of-all-trades problem solver' ratow
is the best choice.

I had a chat with him today and he's accepted.

Ratow has managed to solve any problem which has been thrown at him so i'm sure he can make a difference here too.

NOTE: It's not up to ratow to take on this task by himself and do all the coding himself neither.

He's a volunteer just like anyone else and has a private life aswell.

There have been some people with interest in helping out in this area,
but i'm afraid it's not always easy for me to offer guidance since i'm so busy with other stuff,
and it can be a bit complicated to put a jacket around an engine which new GUI developers don't know much about.

Since ratow has been with us for quite a while now (from the start ! :),
he's perfect to coordinate this.

I've developed a newer photoshop mockup and a proof of concept using wxformbuilder ontop of the wxwidgets toolkit.

The choice of wxwidgets relies upon the fact that it's truely open source, and portable.
QT was a good option too, but it is difficult to use it without a commercial license on windows development platforms. (VS2005)

'guilherme' has showed interest about a month ago,
and i sent him some initial draft information and a mockup,
which he has been working on.

i'm not exactly sure what his status is, and he has'nt communicated much, so i think it's best at the moment that
ratow contacts him, and other people who have expressed interest in helping out in this area and creates a 'plan'.

Ratow can hand out CVS accounts if needed after the usual dance of a couple of forum posted, patches and motivation from new people.

I've spent some time today to refine the mockup i made last month with some more detailed ideas,
which i will present in a separate post in this forum.

Hello again

Let's get this started then ;)
I'll study the current design and get it implemented and integrated to a bare minimum, so we can have a common base for others to build upon and contribute.
Radiance's two phase approach explained in the other thread is excellent but hopefully soon I'll have some finer tasks described so we can coordinate this better.
