Sketchup exporter: first experiments

Postby mimhotep » Wed Dec 23, 2009 7:17 am

Hi everybody,
these are the first results on the Sketchup exporter.
Nothing fancy, only a simple brute force not optimized raw triangle geometric export (difficult sentence :D).
Materials are added manually writing the mat file.

Here are some preliminary image results, using a mesh made of 47705 triangles, exported in about 4 to 6 seconds.

Black spots are due to holes in the original mesh.

Cheers,
Mimmo

Hi,

Good start! Nice to see you've been able to make some progress.
Good luck for all the remaining bits :)

Thank you Jeanphi.

Next steps will be elaboration of groups and components and optimization of geometric exporting.
Then materials, maybe?

A Merry Christmas to the board.

Great to see you working on this! Despite the silence in this thread, I'm sure many people (including me) will appreciate your work once the plugin gets to a usable state.

Thank yoou guys.
I hope to satisfy all expectations which seem to be high.
Currently the exporter is not usable, first because I'm testing features and then because it still lacks an UI.
Anyway, Sketchup's components and groups exporting is on its way. I need to minimize the number of exported text lines, some of them are redundant.

What can I say... even at a slow pace but code is growing :D

hi mimhotep

I just wanted to be another one to give you my suport ont this. Like it was said before, there's lots of people waiting for something like this for sketchup. And having sketchup a free 3D version and the suport of a 3d model database (3dWarehouse) once you release this believe me when i say that you will be shocked how fast your plugin and lux will spread in the web

Again thanks for your efforts and good luck on this ;)

Here I am again.
First of all I want to thank maleemk, Dacad and everyone for your support.
This time I come with a small update.
I want to introduce.... colors :o

colors_01.jpg
A simple scene with colors
colors_01_skp.jpg
Corresponding Sketchup view

Simple plain colors, exported as a matte material in Lux, no specularity, no transparency at all.
Don't say anything on illumination: it's an environment plain light grey ;)
Default Lux parameters for everything else.

Model: 'The Monroe Bar' from the 3DWarehouse by Surya Murali.

Cheers,
Mimmo
