nk files currently only work with the metal material, so you can use any file but you won't get the transmission part. I have a plan to support any nk file with transmission, but I would first like to add support for attenuation inside arbitrary shapes.
I hadn't heard of those r2 files, what are they for? Is there a spec available so that we can add support for them in the core? Maybe you could create tasks in Mantis http://www.luxrender.net/mantis for features you'd like to see?
You're not asking for the easiest feature first. I had already seen this SWAP technology and it's pretty awesome, but I might have an idea on how they do it
