LuxRender v0.6 Splashscreen Competition

Postby Radiance » Tue Dec 09, 2008 3:41 am

EDIT: Competition is now closed, thanks for your entries! :)
---------------------
Hello everyone :)

As luxrender is nearing the ubiqitous v0.6 release soon,
It's again time to launch a splashscreen competition.

The objective of the competition, besides providing a nice splash image, is pre-release testing and feedback.

There is no topic/theme, you are free to choose anything you want.

The competition lasts 21 days, during which the lux developers will post updated release candidates,
as such it's important that anyone working on an entry keeps an eye out for luxrender/luxblend updates,
which are regularly posted in the 'weekly builds' forum here (for Windows and Mac users):

viewforum.php?f=30

Linux users can build new versions straight from the CVS repository by following the 'building on linux' page in the luxrender wiki:

http://www.luxrender.net/wiki/index.php ... g_on_Linux

The winning splash will be chosen by a forum poll, which lasts 2 days.

Just as before with v0.5 release, the splashscreen will be embedded into lux's gui version,
in the auto-installers, and on release/news/collages pages.

Questions, issues, bugs and feedback can be made on the lux User support forum which is here:

viewforum.php?f=16

Submission Information
----------------------

* The Competition starts today on Tuesday 9 December 2008
* All entries must be submitted on or before tuesday 23 December 2008 (UPDATE: Prolongued for 1 week, ends on tuesday 30 December 2008)

* All entries must be submitted in the competition's main forum post:

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1248

Please include your nickname, full name, rendertimes and optionally some information/motivations.

* Minimum rendersize: min 1000x600 pixels.

Rendersize is very important as we need to be able to use submissions for website decoration etc...
In case of a portrait size, the image must still be at least 1000 pixels wide, for example: 1000x1600 pixels.

* Submission format: uncompressed 24bits colour PNG.

Although you can post jpeg's on the forum, keep a propper uncompressed PNG or TGA version so in case you're the winner,
we have a clean image with no compression artifacts/quality loss.

* Since this is a splashscreen, some content can be inappropriate, such as:

- Inappropriate religious, sexual/nudity, discriminative or political topics

Good Luck!,

final edit:

I withdraw my entry, I don't want my work messed with by someone who would post a commercial advert as a splash screen, that car is deeply lame on every level, wtf, add a billion features and then whine about how no one enters the splash screen comp? blaaa.....anyway I speak the truth, we all know it.

I can't tell you how annoyed I am at just the fundamental lack of human respect.

I'm going to give this a shot this weekend.

What are the most important upgrades for version 0.6 compared to 0.5, perhaps that can be the main subject/object for/in the image.
Cheers!

spectral textures, motion blur and thin film coatings...

for the motion blur,
i'll be releasing some updates tomorrow which will allow you to start using it...
so if you want you can start preparing scenes with motion blur in mind as of now :)

I had some great idea's this weekend to do with the logo and tried to get it into blender (export svg and import), but that didn't work correctly and I simply lack the knowledge to fully let luxrender show it's true power.

Alright, I got nothing for the splash, sorry. I will slowly learn/work for a good one for 0.7. :)
Cheers!

Imho you have already proved you can do a great logo, packing all the new features into one image is starting to seem impossible anyway...I to had some issues importing svg, what I had to do was export the svg from Inkscape, load it in GIMP and save it as a GIMP path file .ps iirc, then I important that into blender as a GIMP 2.0 path, which generates errors and creates several versions of the path, I delete all the versions but one and then add thickness before converting to a mesh, it looks fine for objects set to solid but when smoothed the normals are messed up.

This is what I was able to get at the end of all that:
rosy.cross.1.jpg

I am still trying to figure out the proper way to get Inkscape to play nice with blender.

So, its not your skill level imo, the tool chain integration is buggy.

Hi all,

I think it might be a good idea to extend the competition for another week, thereby making the final date for posting submissions Tuesday 30 December 2008.

This will give a little more time to the current works in progress i've seen on the forums, and if you have something ready, you've got some more time to render it and/or make some final tweaks :)

Good luck,
