Manhole Cover 1...

Postby Carbonflux » Sat Jun 02, 2012 3:38 am

This is the first in a series of renders I have been planing involving pictures of the street, manhole covers, drains, sidewalks with leafs etc. The main idea is to think about the origins of texture. Its very easy see texture as random or noise and most CG textures in a way are unless they are scans etc but what I really want to do is notice how texture is physical memory, there are no random aspects, no overall mathematical formula, texture is physical history and I submit a form of language written in causality and full of meaning. I started taking pictures of the street and sky years ago looking for structures that "felt" like I should be able to read them. This is a reduction of the language of the world as a whole looking for a bridge to symbols or mandalas, the idea being to try and speak in and read a language beyond three dimensions.

In terms of applying this I am trying to use photo style textures not literally but as a noise source like one would use a Musgrave algorithm also there is something about placing things in a flat perspective that frames things as symbols imo. For constrast the manhole texture itself is driven by a Musgrave texture and the background by a highly processed photo texture. This is a first try at this idea and I hope to develop this idea more fully over the years.

Interesting, really resembles a mandala. :) Looking forward for the next in your series.

Thanks for looking SATtva :)

I realize this is weird one so I did not expect any response but I wanted to try it for the record so that the universe knew I thought about it if that makes sense.

Actually it makes me wonder how frequently i go past some mundane things i've seen million times in my life and didn't noticed something special about them, and then -- bang! -- i have new eyes. :)

Agreed :)

When I was in art school our life drawing class was 8 hours long, I used to think that was insane, the teacher would talk a lot about how we should be forced to learn how to see and would point out that the Sorbonne would do 12 hours or more of life drawing a day.

I don't think I really have learned how see as a artist yet but I do know exploring art is the process where we do learn to see and I have finally learned to accept the process.

I think with the right mindfulness just walking down the street, any street should be like walking through a living history of life and information, seeing the world as mature nano-technology rather than the view that matter is Incompetent and dead. :geek:
