Soap (faking SSS)

Postby xray » Mon May 31, 2010 7:09 pm

- motivation: faking SSS
- rendertime: ~ 8 hours
- about 1.1 Million faces
- "complex" 3 type mixed material with bump and absorption over 2 objects
- no other postpro than the luxrender ones (vignetting... etc)

This was really a hard task getting it right. I think its still a month ago I started to try creating a soap material, how you can see in my material thread.
But now I think I got a really nice one, even its a bit different from the one in my material thread... So now I cant wait until lux has real sss and we can do
much more complex organic things.

very nice Xray, the wood looks like nice old weathered plank and the soap translucent and greacy.. well done ! do you have a more contrasted version or test renders showing the SSS more specifically ? The cube-soap in your material thread was impressive, here it is "only" realistic  that's the hardest: don't show off the effect but use it for realism, you succeeded !

Thanks a lot guys!! That was really a hard work but the result and the things I've learned was worth doing! And I also don't wont to hold it like a secret so I will create a little how-to and showing my work-flow for this scene (If you are interested) even if some of you might know how to create things like that. Be patient might take some time (maybe Ill do it on weekend)... Don't know, maybe someone can tell me if the wiki is the right place for something like that?!

In the end I really got short in time with rendering. Ive started in the end of the 30. with rendering which should be the final, after I'm coming from work next day I was really shocked when I saw that I selected the wrong materials... :D fortunately the clock here in germany goes 7 hours ahead, than the forum's one.

@tokiop: Sorry but I don't have renders with more contrast etc. But I think I could create them in view of a how-to/work-flow

hey xray, of course a how-to would be beneficial if you have the time ! I was asking for more contrasted/backlight version only for curiosity and to see better the sss, but the current light setup fits well the scene.. looking forward your next projects !

Utterly unrealistic !

Nobody in his right mind would market a soap with a math diagram on the tag ! Using such big nails (and so many!) for a ridiculous soap box is a waste of resources. There's no way the barcode will pass the registers. Fortunately, the def is too low to read the small print where I am pretty sure more blatent inaccuracies can be found.

Just kidding of course... ;)

Your mats are awesome. Lighting / scene are great too.

I reckon the colour fringes (lens aberations) should be ever so slighty less noticeable.

Can't wait to read the How-to !
