thanks!

this is the last scene I've been working on.
Blender 2.6 Luxrender 1.0RC

Now I'm using a Sun+Sky and some small lights (gained very low). I'll probably add a sky hdri and a Sun-only.
Any suggestions?

Try to swap whites and blacks to rebalance the composition.

nice suggestion :D . I'll rotate everything (chessboard and pieces) by 180°.

I'd say that a mid-game situation is usually much more interesting than the initial position of the pieces, and plenty of good games between top players can be found online so it should be easy to find one that is nice looking.

The border of the board seems to be 2-dimensional (flat like a paper) - I'd change that, it looks weird.

changes:
- changed sunlight settings
- lowered internal light's importance
- swapped black pieces and white pieces
- 3D board (it was a plain)
- merged lightgroups for smaller flm file

Can someone help me render it, please? I'd like to carbonflux it :D . It will be my entry for the contest.
scene download: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BwOqPT ... mZJVnhMZmc
the FLM file will be about 55MB big.

edit: sorry, wrong scene

I'm going to make a night-time version with pieces in mid-game configuration

Wait what wrong scene ?? Shit I just just got past 1,5 Ks/P on this scene. If you want me to post the flm just ask me.

Nice but the sky gives a strange impression, like if the room was floating in the sky. Maybe some frosted glass on the windows might help. Do as you wish and good luck.
PS: I am in the contest too :)

In the wrong scene there isn't the golden edge between chessboard and numbers. Anyway, thank you for your help.
You can upload here the png picture.

You're right about the sky. I'll add a balcony, like the room is in a high floor of a skyscraper.
