I think an interesting test for seeing the difference would be waiting until night and working purely on artificial light. And then in Lux set your lighting to the same power levels. So a 60w flood in the room would be a 60w flood in the blender export.

I've contacted my friend to ask him if he wants to do a re-shoot with all the comments you've made in mind. I will update if he does a new shoot. Likely a shoot at night with a known wattage bulb (good suggestion) and a set up that makes for the maximum amount of DOF blur for items not in focus.
