Why has there been no development is Luxrender?

Postby th3amaz3mak3r » Fri Nov 25, 2011 9:51 am

Is it just me or is it a fact that development in Luxrender has frozen for the past 5 or 6 months. Since the advent of Cycles, it seemed to me that the Luxrender guys were not really going ahead and doing something. Whats the reason behind this? When Cycles came out, i was actually anxious to see what Luxrender had to offer since it has undergone more development but i was surprised to see that nothing happened, despite the fact that Yafaray has made many developments in this year.

This is nonsense, please refer to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7432

See also the development logs:

Personally, I don't think development has slowed. IMO what is being seen is a return to a sort of normal development pace now that the GPU and Blender 2.5x hype has mostly passed. Everyone got massively excited over the last year or two about these two new major advances for the project, and now that we have use of these new technologies, there is no reason to complain - and also the LuxRender project can once again start to look at stabilising itself and moving forward with it's own new features.

And lets not forget the Weekly Builds forum where you can grab a package and actually try all the new goodies :)

I think the OP lends support to my thought that we should promote development news on the front page more. If you visit the front page, you'd easily end up with the impression that th3amaz3mak3r had.

My idea was to have some easily visible section which notes how to find development builds, and also post bigger development news (like introduction of normal mapping fex) in the news feed once the weekly builds contain it.

Thoughts?

I like this idea.

EDIT: There's a blank space on the left side of the home page, we could in theory put a dedicated development blog summary there, pointing to a dev blog page on the site.

Hi,

Good ideas. I was thinking along somewhat similar lines looking at other open source projects web sites. The idea of a dev blog is quite nice, it will be more readable than a feed of the commits. We could use the current news feed for dev news, but I think that only a few people can update it, we need to make it more easily accessible, Doug, is there a way to do that with the CMS?

Hi,

Additionnally some facts from ohloh (https://www.ohloh.net/p/luxrender):
Past 30 days activity:
1 new committer joined the project
Paolo Ciccone – Nov 17
12 committers made 54 commits
133 files modified
12550 lines added
12966 lines removed

Doesn't exactly looks like no development is happening...

Although a commit feed might be good as a quick reference, perhaps as a ticker along the top/bottom of the page?
