LuxRender v0.7RC2 released

Postby jeanphi » Mon May 03, 2010 1:35 pm

Hi everybody,

The LuxRender team is pleased to bring you the second pre release of the upcoming 0.7 version.

Based on feedback from the first pre release, we've fixed a whole lot of bugs and polished the GUI and LuxBlend exporter. I want to thank the whole dev team for its commitment to improving LuxRender. Let's shake out the last remaining bugs and don't forget to report bugs in our bug tracker.
While working on this release, dougal2 and Gensher fired the boosters on LuxBlend 2.5, it's not yet ready for prime time but should be for next RC in about 1 month.

As before we've prepared a set of archives containing everything packaged.
Please download the relevant archives for your platform:
Windows:
32 bits SSE1 zip (no Qt GUI)
32 bits SSE2 zip (no Qt GUI)
64 bits SSE2 zip (no Qt GUI)

Windows QT: *** SEE DOUGAL2 POST BELOW FOR INFO ***
32 bits SSE2 zip
64 bits SSE2 zip

MacOS:
Universal installer (MacOS 10.5 and above)

Linux:
32 bits SSE1 archive
32 bits SSE2 archive
64 bits SSE2 archive

Changes since v0.7RC1:
- jensverwiebe and tomb have spent a great lot of time improving and polishing the Qt GUI
- SATtva did a great job fixing bugs in LuxBlend, improving instances export and adding hair support
- LordCrc and jensverwiebe upgraded image loading to use FreeImage which brings support for more file formats
- others tried to fix as much bugs as possible in the core including some nasty memory consumption and crashes (only 28 items left in Mantis of which only 8 bugs)

Yay!

I would like to clarify some changes I've made regarding resume film files. The first change is based on this request. The film files are now written to "fileame.flm.temp", then the file "filename.flm" is removed (if it exists) and "fileame.flm.temp" is renamed. This should prevent data loss in case something goes wrong.

The second change relates to the "restart resume film" option. If it's enabled and "filename.flm" exists when lux starts up, it will rename this file to "filename.flm1". Before renaming to "filename.flm1", it will delete "filename.flm1" if it exists. It will then save to "filename.flm" when the time comes (either after the write interval is reached or you close the renderer). This should give you one chance to recover any data in case you forget to disable the option.
May contain traces of nuts.

Indeed, I've corrected the typo and referenced all Linux builds you did.

I want to thank the whole dev team as well, including Jeanphi! It's not just that the speed at which this program is being improved keeps amazing me, also the helpful and friendly attitude of everyone involved is a pleasure to witness. :)

Now let me go and find some bugs. ;)

*** INFO FOR WINDOWS QT BUILDS ***

I've provided these builds, which to the best of my limited knowledge should be fully functional. The migration of the windows build environment to QT and FreeImage has not been particularly easy, but as far as I can see everything looks OK.

These builds were produced with Visual Studio Express 2008 on a 64bit Windows 7 machine, using the Win64 SDK as a manual addon.

The build environment which produced these builds is available in a repo http://src.luxrender.net/windows and I'll try to update the README files and .bat scripts to reflect todays changes before the next RC or release.

Thanks to all the Lux team: great (and fast) work... as usual!
I'm happy to see the download is so slow ;)

cheers,
