Carpaint has light loss at angles

Postby J the Ninja » Wed Jul 13, 2011 3:11 am

Carpaint, it seems, exhibits the same light loss problem that the old glossy material did. The 3 balls below are perfect spheres, glossy-lossy on the left, carpaint in the middle, new glossy on the right. Their material settings are noted in the floating text above them (they're all the same). Scene files are attached.

Hi,

There was an attempt to speed up the carpaint material by using a glossy material at its base, however it makes it impossible to correctly implement the paper data and I think it is still using the old glossy. Maybe we should just use the paper structure and live with the speed until we can really speed up the whole material system.

It seems like the car paint texture is a kind of benchmark between rendering engines in a way, car renders being part of the basic "must do" images in photo realistic rendering, it seems like the speed issues in this case are secondary because of how closely car paint is examined. Its interesting really, cars are a powerful archetype. :)
