physical Sky night-day-clouds papers

Postby patro » Tue Apr 19, 2011 10:01 am

hi,
sometimes ago i've started a topic for "feature requests", one of the most voted is physical sky with clouds.

i want to link here all the paper and opensource software that could interest devs or any other volounters for adding this feature into Luxrender.

softwares:

Fracplanet

Volumetric 3D clouds renderer

papers & web pages:

http://www.vterrain.org/Atmosphere/ at the site... the linked paper is missing but this could be the missing one.
title Real-Time Rendering of Planets with Atmospheres

Real-Time Cloud Rendering

nightsky

Lord Crc also suggested
.... perhaps we could make a script to generate scenes which could be rendered with lux, which would generate skyboxes (using env cam), that way one can do an overnight, get a nice skybox and use it for several scenes, we already have a cloud density volume, so...

great resources and ideas patro, thanks for posting this :) - I like the idea of making it a external script. In fact I think it would be interesting to ship some scripts with lux for 2.5x blender, like the smoke generator also.

nice collection of papers patro ;)
If there is a script implementation i hope it will be easy enough to translate in 3ds max also :)

Love the nightsky paper! I want that in Lux, badly. Would it be possible to expand sunsky so it switches to that when the sun goes below the horizon? Maybe have it generate both the regular sky and the night sky, and blend them when the sun is near the horizon?

the night sky don't need to be blended in a way with the sunsky.. luxrender can do it in automatic. if the night sky is rendered as a light a part.
the nightsky can be always rendered... only that it's contribution isn't visible. once the sun is going down... the nightsky became more and more visible ;)
