LuxRender uses a tabbed interface. By default, the Render tab is shown, but there is also a Log tab available. The file menu and a bottom bar showing information about rendering speed and progress always show, regardless of which tab has been selected.

menu bar

There are just three menu's in the menu bar: 'file', 'render' and 'help'.

file

The file menu contains the following items:

  • Open scenefile - this lets you open a file with the .lxs extension
  • Exit - this exits the program

You might expect a 'save' option here, but the rendering is saved at regular intervals automatically.

render

  • Resume - this will resume the rendering process after it has been paused
  • Pause - this pauses the rendering process
  • Stop - this stops the rendering process

The functionality of this menu can also be accessed by using the buttons at the top left of the render tab.

help

The help menu contains just one item:

  • about

This displays a screen with the version of LuxRender you are using, the names of the developers and the address of the LuxRender website.

rendering preview tab

The rendering preview tab shows a preview of the rendering. Over the course of time, the amount of noise decreases.

Holding the left mouse button and dragging pans the view; pressing the middle mouse buttons zooms to fit the screen; the mouse wheel zooms in or out; the right mouse button zooms to 100%.

Apart from the rendering preview, there are a couple of buttons in this tab. On the left, there are buttons for starting, pausing and stopping renderings and a button for the number of threads to be used. For fastest results, set this to the number of processor cores that are available on your computer (typically one, two or four).

After version 0.5, a number of buttons have been added on the right, amongst them a rectangle zoom tool.

log tab

This tab shows log messages that are shown during the rendering process, including:

  • information about loaded bitmap images
  • information about progress of the rendering progress
  • information about writing output messages

bottom information bar

This bar displays information about the state of your rendering; from left to right:

  • total rendering time that has passed
  • current rendering speed (in samples per second)
  • average rendering speed since the start of the current rendering
  • number of samples calculated per pixel of the output image
  • efficiency of the rendering process
