From LuxRender Wiki
This page covers the setup procedure for LuxRender on Mac OS X systems. For the most part, this is a simple and straightfoward process that should be familiar for most Mac users.

Getting the installer
The current release of LuxRender is available here: http://www.luxrender.net/en_GB/standalone
You can scroll down to find the appropriate archive for your system. For LuxRender 0.8, two archives are avaible. One for 10.5 Leopard, the other for 10.6 Snow Leopard. You should select based on which version of the OS X you are running. The Snow Leopard build is also compatabile with 10.7 Lion, and is recommended for Lion users as well. The Leopard build lacks support for GPU acceleration and has fewer performance optimzations, and is only recommended for Macs actually running Leopard.
Both builds are universal for 32bit and 64bit Intel Macs. PowerPC Macs are not supported for LuxRender. These systems lack the performance (and in many cases, memory) needed for using LuxRender effectively. In addition, Intel Macs running 10.4 Tiger are not supported either.
Installing LuxRender
To install the main LuxRender program, run the LuxRender .pkg file included in .dmg. The file will open in OS X's Installer program, which will walk you through the install. It will create a folder in /Applications called "LuxRender" which will include two items. 1, the LuxRender.app bundle which is the main GUI program and also has LuxRender's command line tools built in. 2, a set of scripts for doing common tasks with those command line tools. It also will optionally symlink the command line tools to /usr/local/bin allowing you to access them simply by typing the tool's name (ex, luxconsole) in the Terminal window.
Installing Exporters
Blender 2.5
To install LuxBlend25, double-click the included webloc file. This will start a download of a specially packaged LuxBlend25 zip. You don't need to unzip this file, just select the zip itself in Blender's "Install Addon" menu. This bundle is specially prepared for this purpose, and also includes the Pylux module as well.
Blender 2.49
After making sure you have a compatible version of Blender and Python, run the LuxBlend installer script. This installer gives you two options: installing LuxBlend inside Blender.app or installing in an external Python scripts folder. We recommend the latter method. In all cases, please read the information that is provided by the installer during installation.
The first choice only works if Blender is directly in the Applications folder and is named Blender.app. The installer will put the LuxBlend script inside the Blender application package, so that it will be found by Blender automatically.
The second choice creates a PythonScripts-folder in /users/shared unless you specify another path. After that, start Blender, set Blender's scripts path to this folder in the User Preferences window and press ctrl U to save preferences. This has the advantage that when upgrading Blender, you don't have to worry about accidentally deleting your scripts. Also multiple versions of Blender (for example a stable version and an experimental build) can make use of the same scripts.
