Network rendering on port 18018

Postby PeeVee » Sun Jun 03, 2012 5:06 am

Hi,

Upon reading the Wiki on network rendering I decided to give it a go on my network, but I always get the same error: Luxrender cannot connect to the server... I have the IP adresses correct (I know this because I use Wake up Lan to activate my rendernodes) but it does not work...
I added a rule for both in- and outbound to open up port 18018 on the client and the node... My guess is I did it wrong... Is there a walkthrough available on how to open up port 18018? Does it use UDP or TCP? What else has to be configured to allow for Luxrender traffic accros the network?

Thanks a lot,

Peevee

The master initiates TCP sessions to port 18018 on the slaves. The slaves do not initiate TCP sessions towards the master. UDP is not used. So the only rule you need is for the slaves to allow incoming TCP on 18018, if your Firewall doesn't allow you to grant permissions by application binary.

What OS are you using? Firewall configuration is highly OS-dependent. But both Windows and MacOS at least should prompt you the first time you run luxconsole in slave mode if you want to add luxconsole to the firewall.

agreed, it does sound like a firewall issue.

Thanks,

I'm running Windows 7.
So on every slave there should be an inbound rule to open port 18018? Does the router need to forward anything?

Thanks a lot,

The Windows Firewall on each slave PC needs a rule, and the router in front of the slaves needs a rule.

Thanks for the replies!

What rule do I need to give the router? Which port do I need to forward to which IP or visa versa? (I use four slaves)

Thanks,

If all machines are on the same network, the router does not need a firewall rule added. And since you are on Windows 7, you should be adding luxconsole.exe to the Windows firewall (or are you using a 3rd party firewall?) and not adding an explicit rule for 18018.

I see,

Al nodes have the inbound TCP rule, the luxconsole and luxrender program are added to the exceptions on the firewall of the client. Do they also need to be added to the exceptions of teh firewalls on all the slaves? (yes i'm using only one network and windwos firewall)

Thanks a lot,
