Jade Tutorial

Postby drlog » Sun Apr 01, 2012 9:35 pm

Hi all,

I am thinking of adding an additional material tutorial to the wiki in order to create the attached material (Jade with an impurity streak).

Do you think this would be useful? Also, do you think I should tweak this material? Suggestions?

The reason I ask is because I don't want to go to the effort of making all the images etc to have it removed later :)

So I was thinking something like this (all blender focused since it's the only 3D software I know):

- Talk about volumes and show some examples with no texturing (glossy translucent with clear vs homogeneous + examples of some settings including roughness)
- Talk about texture development for diffuse texture (when developing a texture, I render on matte and "imagine" it being used)
- Talk about adding the streak of impurity to the diffuse texture
- Apply to a model (I have attached a crappy elephant I made)

Comments/suggestions welcome!

Cheers,
Drlog

I'd say any tutorial is useful, especially one talking of complex material like this one.

I am thinking of using this model as a base for the tutorial (with a blender download on the wiki so people can mimic the tutorial)

Thoughts on the model itself (yes, I'm not that great at modelling, feel free to fix any problems with it :D)?

I have also attached a matte render. I was thinking of having a "from this to this" at the start of the tutorial. Obviously, once a decent material is on the model, it will look a lot better.

Cheers

You can play with lighting a bit. I haven't looked into the blend file, but from the image it seems you're using two meshlights with similar size and power. Try to enlarge one of the lamps 4-5 times the current size (and raise it power a bit) so it can provide almost an ambient light with practically no sharp shadow.

I agree creating a tutorial would be a great help.

Hello all,

I have written most of the text and created about half of the images for this tutorial. What do you think of the jade material in the picture attached? Lighting? I added a mesh light behind the pendant to show off the volumetric scattering.

Comments welcome! 8-)

This image is only at 1200 s/px but I will be travelling for the next 2 weeks and plan on letting the final render cook for the whole time (should get about 50000+ s/px). After that, I will upload the tutorial.

Cheers!

Looking very good! If the tutorial will be of the same quality as this material then things are looking good. :)

I do agree that it would be nice to get it cooked a bit longer but 50000 sounds like overdoing it to me.
