An idea for a new competition

Postby Dade » Wed Feb 01, 2012 12:17 pm

It has been recently noted that the mandatory test scene in the repository includes 2 deprecated material and miss many new features too: http://www.luxrender.net/mantis/view.php?id=1196

It may be a good idea to have, in the future, a competition about designing a new mandatory test scene

...or Lux test/showcase scenes in general.

In any case +1 from me.

+1, yup.

I'd plump for showcase, myself, not testing scenes, but w/ever.

I agree, +1

A-man's Cornell box is a good example of this:

Haha, I was thinking this, problems I noticed though were the aliasing around the reflection on the glass cube, as well as the sheer power to get decent results (I've been going for over a week, plus around 30k samples from other people). I imagine if I remove the scattering from the air, and maybe increase the coefficient of the water, it would be a cool scene. Also, would it be more natural for the window to be on one of the walls? I left it in the roof to be more consistent with the original Cornell box, but windows don't usually live on the roof ;)

This sounds like a wonderful idea. That will be next after this upcoming competition. For this upcoming competition we are going back to the theme interpretation/artistic expression style of competition. The theme for the next competition was chosen by Inlite. I have no ideas but I'm excited to see what others do with it.

That sounds very good, I'm looking forward to it and hope I'll find some time (I'm short before making my A-levels...).

For the competition this thread is about: could some developer describe to a not-a-real-programmer-and-has-never-written-a-raytracer-guy like me what such a testscene must include (I don't know about lighpaths and that stuff at all).

It is a scene which includes all the basic materials and covers most of the renderer features. See a cornell box here which was used up until now. The main goals of the scene are regression testing and benchmarking. If it also has an appalling look, then it's even better (this is an aspect we're certainly lacking with the current scene :)).

Do you by any chance mean "appealing"?
