Could you ellaborate a bit more how we could help? I'd gladly give some spare cycles to render material previews, if that's the goal. :)

I did set up a virtual machine image for it, I'll post some more details later when I get home

The VirtualBox machine image is hosted here: <snip - removed because it's out of date>
You need to unarchive the file, and import it into VirtualBox. The machine will boot into a linux login prompt. Log in as instructed on screen and it will start rendering previews for the lrmdb. The VM requires full internet access to upload/download flm and png files.
If left running, it will iterate over all the materials in the database, gradually improving the quality of each of the previews in turn.
To stop the renderer, just close the machine - don't worry too much about stopping the script or logging out etc.

Okay, I'll give it a try (downloading the image right now).

Works like a charm! I started crunching away, but on my laptop it is a bit noisy (all fans go crazy as usual) so I won't let it run overnight.

I'll try also to set it up tomorrow at work, if it can use my idle computers at night.

I'm adding my two cents by running it on my laptop overnight.
Using the several PCs connected to the LAN of the office where I work could be more proficient, but you should modify your client so that it could be run in a windows network, in a client-host fashion, because only one pc on the network is allowed to access internet.

I've tried running it too on my render box but ran into some trouble, probably as the result of my limited Linux skills. After installing Virtualbox on Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit), importing the image and booting it I get the following error:

rm: cannot remove 'render_client.py': Read-only file system
cp: cannot create regular file 'render_client.py': Read-only file system
ERROR: could not make working directory

I suspect this means that this means that I don't have the right rights set on the virtual hard disk, but none of the options that I can set in Gnome seems to help. Also installing as root doesn't help (and is probably a bad idea anyway).

It's just your forum account. You can sign in from the mats panel in Blender 2.5 with your forum username/password. Then just hit the upload button. It will be added to the queue immediately when you hit upload, you won't get any other prompts or messages.
