LuxMax in official installer

Postby Lord Crc » Wed May 25, 2011 5:49 pm

Hi,

while I've gotten bits and pieces of information on IRC my brain is pretty information repellent these days, so I figured a thread would work better :)

I want to include LuxMax into the official 0.8 installer for windows. Is LuxMax in a state where this makes sense at the current time?

If so, what to get and where to put it... Are the wiki pages still the proper way to install LuxMax? Is there a more automated way I can use for my installer?

I'll need to detect the 3dsmax directory it seems, as the scripts directory is a subdirectory of this one, correct? ie not a per-user scripts folder. Moure had some environment variable which would be helpful, if there's a registry key with the dir in it I'd love to get that one as well.

From what I gather the script works for multiple versions. Ideally I'd like to keep a list of all versions it works for internally and look for the latest one and just use that. Powerusers with multiple parallel installs will know what to do manually anyway (or they should  ).

Cheers

3ds max 2012 registry key that points to installation directory

Code: Select all
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\3dsMax\14.0\MAX-1:409
Name: Installdir
Data: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2012\

I guess from a small search that what changes in prev editions is the 14.0, its 13.0 for max 2011
and 12.0 for max 2010.

Now for the installation there are 2 folders that need to be copy pasted.

First there is the scripts/luxmax folder that goes in the 3ds max script directory -->
Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2012\Scripts\Luxmax

And secondly the plugins folder that must be merged with 3ds max plugin folder -->
Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2012\plugins

The same files are used for any of the supported versions, max 2010/11/12 x32/x64 :)

Thanks, just to clarify the two folders are located in the "gplourde/mzp" directory in the luxmax repository?

Also, the plug files, are they identical? Ie I can take the 2012 file and just rename it to 2011 fex if I install for Max 2011?

Yes in the gplourde/mzp are the two folders needed.

You dont need to rename anything, just copy paste all the dlx files regardless of the version and only the compatible will be used.
But if you want to do it really "right" the ply_32_2010 and ply_64_2010 are for the max 2010/11 x32 and x64 versions (no need to rename though to 2011),
and the ply_32_2012 and ply_64_2012 are for the 2012 x32 and x64 versions.

I've added luxmax to the installer. I went for the lazy route first, ie copying over all the dlls. They're tiny so ;)

Hopefully it'll work, since I don't have max installed it's a tad hard to test ;)

You can try it out here: LuxRender 0.8 x64 NoOpenCL Setup.exe

Tried it and worked fine on 3dsmax 2012. But since the same files are for all supported versions Max 2010/11/12 i guess there will be no problem there too.
