dumb random test

Postby drBouvierLeduc » Wed Oct 17, 2007 5:39 pm

Hi,
This isn't really a work in progress, rather a dumb test render.
But I HAD to test that new renderer, like I HAD to post that test image !
And at first sight, it seems fast (that image was rendered in 10 min) (2 threads)
I had some bad issues with blender exporter in its current state (the camera is definitely not at the good place, materials behave strange) but I guess it's too early to report those problems.

I'd be definitely watching the development of your renderer, and so far I'm quite impressed. Keep up the good work !

Took a random model I downloaded somewhere, put it on a random floor I made for another scene.. and that's it ! my first test render... (very slight noise removal in ps)

salut docteur! ;-)

long time no see ;-)

not bad for a random test.

i'm aware of the issues with the blender exporter,
it's a WIP too ;-)

I'm hoping we can get some bpython developers in to give us a hand with the exporter.
there are major issues with uv map exporting, and the material system is completeley untuned as of yet.
however I did produce the 2 demo renders which got posted with it, so with some experience it's certainly
possible to export proper scenes with it...

10 minutes? which render settings did you use?

It looks quite good for ten minutes keeping in mind
this is an unbiased engine ??!!

i think it can get about 2x the speed of rc1 sorted for the rc2 release coming soon ;-)

@ckbrd : I used the default LuxBlend settings (wich you can't change at the moment btw). Also I must say the scene has 300k vertices, and was loaded in less then 20 sec.

@radiance : 2x speed in rc2 ? oh my ! This is becoming serious !
Anyway a little remark : I'd rather see LuxBlend as a fork of blendigo, as I think it's much more flexible and easy to use. Aaahhrr, I wich I'd know a little more of python, I would have give it a try.
Well I'm going to make some further tests with the current exporter to see how materials are managed.
Btw, It's been some time since you didn't post any of your neat architectural renders. Too busy with luxrender ?

salut docteur! ;-)

yeah blendigo was an option but it's like 10 times more code and i did'nt really have the time to fork off it as then the exporter would have been 'useable' a month from now.

the lux materials are also completeley different and we are going to use a very different and elegant solution in the future which will make blendigo's material editor concept pretty useless for lux...

the scene parsing code in lux is much faster as it uses a lex/yacc parser instead of an xml parser,
and kd-tree building seems much faster too. i'll be doing some tests with really large models later this weekend...
i've had some preliminary results of 60-70 seconds load+kdtree parse with lux, and a 10 minute load+kdtree parse + crash for indigo, resulting in the need to switch to BIH.
