materials lbm file documentation

Postby MaRo » Mon Nov 23, 2009 11:13 am

Hi,

I'm looking to convert some existing materials to luxrender format.

I had a look in the Core Engine > Materials, API & Scene file format subforum, but could not find any documentation, nor in the wiki.
Maybe I did not search in the right place.

Is there any technical description of the syntax of lbm files?

I would like (for example) to start converting a few indigo materials (depending on their licence).

Thanks for comments

There is documentation there but it is a bit cryptic without practical examples. My best success has been using LuxBlend to export various material setups, and then look at/edit the resulting .lxm files in a text editor. Eventually I'd like to do some more thorough documentation with code examples and rendering previews and whatnot (if just for my own sake as a Lux user), but that certainly shouldn't stop anyone else from doing the exact same thing. :)

Hi,

Are you loking for the lxm file format (exported by LuxBlend and directly usable by LuxRender, but not Blender), or the lbm file format (saved by LuxBlend so that it can be reloaded into Blender, but isn't useable directly by LuxRender)?
The former is just a subset of the scene file format (only Texture and MakeNamedMaterial directives), the later is more vague and is probably going to follow LuxBlend internals).

You're right. I meant the lxm (although both would be interesting).

Then I'll dig the wiki again, I remember there's a page dedicated to te scene file format.

Thanks, and cheers again for the awesome work on this great renderer.

That's a very nice idea, MaRo.. I'd like to convert some of my best (and free) Indigo materials.

Does anyone provide his/her materials on the net?

Hi,

The best way to share a material is to (re)create it in LuxBlend and upload it to the material database.

Thanks for the reply. I will recreate the materials by hand and will upload them to MatDB.

A material editor would be great (for OSX, of course ;)). So that it's possible to create a local material library including previews.
