I doubt so.. portals are here to guide rays into openings
importance sampled ibl is something in way of analyze image and create emitters at bright spots (at least something like that was post about fry is-ibl)

probably analyzing the geometry beforehand and placing portals automatically? or an advanced bidirectional trick? or just pure magic, I guess.

I was curious in that 'secret' infinitesample option so I did quick renders (2 minutes each at 800x600 resolution)
used angular envmaps from paul debevec site, MLT+path int.

top row 'infinite' type
bottom row 'infinitesample' type (angular map seems badly mapped)

renders with infinitesample shows less noise and stronger direct lights.. me likes

Hi,

infinitesample ahsn't received much care and the angular mapping is obviously broken, but that can be fixed. As to the sky, I don't think this will help much. However, maybe merging the sun and sky components could.
