You can do textures for this competition as well. Check the title. ;)

But in the rules it says:
binarycortex wrote:11. The material/texture must be uploaded to the materials database.

How can I upload a texture without attaching it to a material?

I think it's automatic. If it is defined as part of the material.

I know textures are uploaded with the material, but I understood your "textures only"-term that way that we can upload only textures without any materials.
I think I misunderstood you...

The lrmdb2 would support stand-alone textures, but for the time being there's no way to upload just a texture.

Oh, I was thinking more like a simple matte with a texture applied. Would that work dougal2?

By textures only, I meant that all materials use image textures instead of procedural textures.

seems that the material database didn't render the LEDmatrix material correctly. It has a texture applied to the emit channel, but the luxball doesn't emit any light...

Not sure emission is included in the db

Well darn. When I saw that the competition was extended, I updated my copy of luxrender/luxblend25 with the 2011-11-18 Linux build in hopes of putting something together for it now that my life is a little less hectic, but Blender kept segfaulting whenever I'd go to the material display. After messing with some things for a while to no avail, I decided I might have better luck building my own copy, and so I managed that, but now the addon won't enable, giving a long python trace-back ending with "SystemError: initialization of pylux raised unreported exception". I'll keep trying! In the mean time, if anyone has some helpful advice, please do share. :)

You will have an entry from me! :P

Edit: I didn't even think about my Windows partition. I suppose I could just try it there if nothing else succeeds.
