The fryrender rendered image looks quite good. A Candleflame was also on my todo list, and I had the same technique like the fryrender one in mind. If noone will try it, I will do it the next time.

Oh thank you... hope to see some nice renders soon!

in max some feature are missing at time like the mix material, volume, etc.
this make it a a bit difficult to setup a scene like this one.

edit:
if you need some nice texture for the candle...you can register to maxwell or fryrender materials databases and download what you need.
the link below you will find 2 textured candle flame materials:

Sorry, didn't mean to fall off the face of the planet here, but I forgot to subscribe and completely forgot about this.

I'm having some better luck (Two months later and older and hopefully wiser) with emission and mix materials. I'll have to go back to this and see what I can do again.

I have been working on this too. The current dev version of 0.8 has a fix for using a texture for emitter color, but in order to get enough useful light you lose being able to see the colors. I have some other ideas about how to fake this and will keep you posted. I'll also post some of my tests when I get a chance.

Hi fellows !

testing candle light too, with 0.7. Still very wip, trying to calibrate the mats and maps. The maps need high contrast, to have some parts emitting enough light and others showing their color.

Image

The candle flame is 2 meshs, 2 identical materials (null with emission) with a different emission map each.

Whoa! That's the best candle flame I've ever seen with unbiased renderers, looks very convincing.

this is a big great start... :)
you are near the reality....
are you using the new "glossy translucent" mat for the wax?

EDIT:
here a texture pack I made in gimp for 3ds max... I take as reference for the images the tutorial of fryrender...
the contained maps are for 2 geometries of the flame! a inner and a outer.
hope someone find it useful... at time I can't test the candle... due mat limitation of LUXmax.

Nice work, that's very similar to the idea I had. Just haven't had time yet to play with it.
