Hi,

I'm having some problems getting the hybrid render to work. Traditional CPU works fine (as does SmallLuxGPU), but when I select hybrid render the render finishes immediately and doesn't launch Luxrender (even though I have the path set to luxrender set correctly). If I try to open the lxs file that is generated, the lux render log contains the following:
[2011-04-12 18:59:42 Info: 0] Freeing resources.
and then the activity says "Loading aborted"

I'm using slg_apr-02_2011 build with the corresponding luxrender version on a MacBook Pro 17" (i7) with GT 330M graphics.

Thanks for your help,

Gus

Paolo: don't overlook CUDA!
Quote from Octane Render FAQ:

If you are interested in purchasing a new graphics card to use with Octane Render,
the Geforce GTX470 or GTX 480 currently have the best Performance to Price ratio.
But CUDA is proprietary from NVIDIA --darn!

Tom, thank you but CUDA is not supported by Lux so it's not going to be of interest for me. I also don't believe that CUDA is the way of the future, with OpenCL being more widely supported and easier to work with. And there is no official support for CUDA from Apple. On the other hand OpenCL is built-in into Mac OS so it has integration with the OS that CUDA cannot have. I ordered the AMD 5870, it should be in my dirty little hands this Friday :)

Thanks anyway.

May the FORCE be with you!

Fact is, the Octane folks are saying that they are considering an OpenGL-based implementation in some "near" future,
in order to open up the video cards that will be able to be used with Octane Render.

Personally, I loathe stuff that is too proprietary.
E.g. on my computer, you will find nothing from Adobe nor Microsoft.

I assume you meant OpenCL. Proprietary is not necessarily bad, it is often a problem when it limits the choices of people but in many cases there are no problems with that and Adobe is actually a very nice company, they are pretty accessible people.

Cheers.

Yes, that was the problem - I forgot to check the advanced box to find the light strategy.

But now I have another problem - Luxrender now launches, but there is no CPU or GPU activity. The log looks like this:
[2011-04-13 11:45:24 Info: 0] Loading PLY mesh file: 'untitled/Scene/00001/Cube_0000_m000.ply'...

It's probably another setting that I have missed - I am using all the default settings (except for changing to Path and light strategy "one")

Thanks again,

Gus

Your log looks fine, you just set the verbosity to a lower level.

I see you have a GeForce GT 330M working + 4 native threads :)

Too see all whats happening, set verbosity to: verbose

OpenCL: correct.

The Holy Grail of every hi-tech company is to develop a proprietary concept
that becomes a de facto industry standard.

Right now the de facto standard seems to be OpenCL: long may it prosper!

Adobe may be nice, but oh, the prices! :o
Actually, I do have something from them: their browser plugin for Flash. :)

Yes, but at least OpenCL is not proprietary, it's a real open standard, which is the only REAL kind of standard :)

Cheers.
