Blender fails to load the pyluxcore in your luxcore sdk bin folder, so it reverts to another (older?) one located in the Luxblend folder.

Regarding the reason why this could happen, I'm not sure, but... shouldn't there be also a python35.dll in the binaries folder, together with embree and openimageIO? I've never used the sdk binaries yet, so I'm not sure about this.

Edit: you could copy the python35.dll that you can find in the Luxblend folder to the sdk bin folder, and see if it loads.

I've just downloaded the luxcore SDK binaries, but I cannot reproduce that problem: it loads correctly.
And forget the thing about python.dll: it's working without that also here...
I can't understand what's going wrong there...

It may be impossible to load pyluxcore.pyd because you are missing the right DLLs (the one included in the SDK). For instance, the custom Embree DLL version.

Here... I've packed the version i have set on my machine (OS win7) if you'd like to give it a go??

LuxSDKset2017-05.7z (zippyshare)

Inside are: LuxRender_20170401SDK (LuxCore SDK Engine - app) & LuxrenderSDK (LuxBlend addon) ... just extract & put in your preferred directories, set in Blender and render away.
I have both versions installed along (SDK & latest (feb2017) from kalel) to just switch addons as i please (also needs specifying another path to the engine). ;)

Anybody knows why this happens?

It could be because of this fix: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=13328&start=20#p126369
The Blender image was too bright compared to the "ground truth" of a LuxCoreUI render.
