bump maps

Postby grouch » Sun Jul 12, 2009 11:48 pm

Hi, I'm using the latest version of the maya exporter and I'm trying to add some bump to my matte shader. Does lux take normal maps or does it only understand black and white bump maps? Also changing the bump depth and the Use As doesn't seem to have any effect on the bump results, is that right?

I moved the topic here as it seemed more appropriate.

Currently lux only supports heightmaps, and not normal maps for bump mapping. Normal maps is on to-do list. As for bump depth and "use as" I'll refer to the maya experts :)

It should be accepting greyscale bump maps, using the bumpDepth parameter to adjust the strength.

Be aware that the values for bumpDepth should be pretty small - the simulated bump depth in Lux is measured in metres, so values 0.0001 - 0.01 are typical.

So is the bump value centered on RGB 128 like some other software? Meaning, black would be a negative bump and white would be a positive bump? Or does Lux use all 255 grey values for positive bumping? I notice, in LuxBlend I can not set a negative bump value.
