Houdini Exporter -- LuxHoud

Postby DarkSide » Sun Jan 11, 2009 9:04 pm

Hi there.
I started scripting Python for Luxrender exporter of Houdini, one of the most powerful and flexible 3D tools.
I just added some basic primitives, but it seems fairly simple to write an exporter since Houdini provides tool for exporter.

I think I can write the first version in a month and hope I can also integrate Houdini's volume and hair into the future version of Lux.

Here are screenshot and basic render result

Well. Apprentice and HD versions don't support external renderer.
I think I will have to find out some way for exporting lxs file for Apprentice.

Any further progress on this? Where can the code be downloaded?

Since the last post on this was 2009 I can only assume no more work has been done on it. That being the case I will start coding my own exporter for the Linux versions. If anyone is interested in testing this as I complete the initial code let me know. I want to round out a material preview as well so most likely will incorporate elements of SLG possibly. I need to evaluate since the integration needs to be more than just a simple export.

Great news, good luck! :)

The material systems of SLG and LuxRender are not compatible, it is probably a better idea to have a look at Pylux as that works with Python and is used in LuxBlend for the material previews.

Thanks. I will look at PyLux as you have suggested. I have noticed that the evolution of LuxRender still does not contain enough offload to the GPU when I look at Octane or Indigo (or even SLG). I have looked at the Lux source code with LuxRays and the still evolving SLG (2.0preview). I was leaning towards writing a exporter for Indigo or Octane but like the open source nature of LuxRender and the associated projects.

Again, thanks for the heads up on PyLux. I will have a look at it.
