Hi,

infinitesample isn't working yet with bidir, but it shouldn't be that hard to do. The main issue with infinitesample is that it doesn't support portals, and adding support for it would be extremely difficult. So while we had hopes to be able to have only one infinite light type, I guess we'll probably need to keep both.

To be honest I don't mind. I've tried it and it's very useful for studio setups.

Somehow bidir seems to have some issues anyway. I'll post two pictures later
today that will show an issue with bump maps.

will love this is-ibl with bidir - finaly really useful HDR imaginery

portals for ibl for what? to use HDR envmaps in interior scenes? maybe interesting and useful for some cases but...
in most cases scene setups for IBL seems more like exterior setups so no need for portal here :)

Agreed with both commentators. :) If it's possible, keep both infinite and infinitesample, but if you're constrained on supporting both then I vote for infinitesample (with correct bidir support): it's much better to have a faster hdr envmaps for studio setups (and the like).

Hi,

Ok, then that's indeed doable. However, from a user point of view, I don't think there should be an explicit choice in the exporters between both. So what would be the preferred way to handle it:
- use infinitesample if there's no portal and infinite otherwise?
- use infinitesample by default and add a "use portals" option that would switch to infinite if portals are defined?
- something else?

hmm doesn't simple checkbox 'use importance sampling' with helptext 'not working with portals' do the job?

oh I see now..

IMO the best approach is:
use infinitesample if there's no portal and infinite otherwise

If infinitesample is generally better than infinite without any downsides except it doesn't support portals, then there is little need for the user to know what exactly is happening under the hood (though he is still able to know it if he really need to -- if he can read the docs or the source).

I vote for this too. Having "doing thing x breaks thing y" warnings are not very user friendly in my opinion and this way, users will just need to know that under certain conditions, portals slow things down. As portal usage in general needs some instructions already, I don't think this adds any problems.

By the way, could infinitesample speed up sunsky lighting as well?

I'm wondering about what Abel said. Could this help with the sky too? And if so,
then we wouldn't need portals anymore right? Like fry dropped them too. ;o)
