HDR env map problem...

Postby Carbonflux » Thu Aug 21, 2008 4:46 pm

I have been testing HDR openEXR env maps for a light source and have been running into a issue...

with all the HDR maps I have tested, every time I start lux I get a different level of brightness, with all the same settings, these images for example, both the same settings, files, everything, all I did was stop at 10 s/p, delete the .flm and restart...

( All these are tonemapped tga output, the client display looks exactly the same. )

here are some more variations...

sometimes it starts out very dark, I let one run to 900 s/p and it does not really get brighter...

I have tried both my own, terragen-HDRShop-blender..
Meru.hdr.test.3.p.jpg

( 16 meg ) http://www.carbonflux.org/JTM/Meru.hdr.test.3.exr

And several of these...

I have tired every variation on settings I can think of.

I have tried it also with 3 different builds, Aug 2nd, Aug 14th and Aug 20th and I am getting the same results.

It gets worse running over a network because the server and client will pick different brightness levels and when the first film is transfered it is kind of random what it is going to looking like.

LDR maps do not seem to be effected so I plan on using those for now.

Best Regards.

Re: HDR env map problem...solved...

LordCrc helped me figure out the problem in the IRC channel, it was my mistake of course :\

I had set gamma to 2.2 in the environment settings when it should be 1.0 for HDR maps.

To test this I rendered this image using the Grace Cathedral HDR exr image from USC, in the link above.

Meru.HDR.ann.1.grace.jpg
MTL LMprob 0.2, path 10, mitchel, gamma 1.0, aug 20th build, 1000 s/p

Thank you for the help :)

Now that's better :)

First off, most HDR maps are linear so gamma of 1.0 is correct. Second, the texture loading code incorrectly applies the gamma to HDR images without ensuring that the values are in the 0..1 range. Imho the correct action would be to apply it to normalized values.

Radiance: would it be possible to add a warning in the exporter about this? Or possibly even change it by default if it detects that an exr is used? Ie LDR = 2.2, HDR = 1.0? I suspect this might be the source of grief in the future if it's not fixed :)

Hey,

I fixed it in cvs :)
there's no detection for ldr types, but i assume everyone will use openexr,
otherwise they will have to set it back to 2.2 ...
