Magnetic bicycle lighting

Postby klayman » Tue Jan 09, 2018 6:15 am

A short video for my project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_t7YO1Tz6wk
Made entirely in open source software: modeled and composited in Blender, rendered with LuxRender.

Damn good video and damn good idea (I do 10,000-12,000 km/year on bikes :D)

P.S. out of curiosity Lux classic or LuxCore ?

Thank you, Dade! Quite impressive numbers. It's Lux Classic - there are some issues with LuxCore which make it very hard to impossible to render anything like this (I've reported them here earlier).

You mean this thread, right? viewtopic.php?f=16&t=13168#p124991
I hope we can implement motion blur correctly in the new addon.
I look forward to work with you as a tester on this problem :)

Yes, motion blur is the main problem. Besides it, there are some more (may be luxblend-related):
  • IES-data is used only for forward-pointing hemisphere, while backwards-pointing is discarded
  • Camera shift doesn't work
  • Sometimes there are strange glitches with linked object/materials

Animation export with the new API can also be improved, I think. While I like the idea of exporting textures alongside the scene config, as it may be handy for remote stills rendering, it makes luxcoreconsole almost useless for remote animation rendering. Currently I can't just export a batch of configs without overwriting them.

And the last but not least - LuxRender Classic is capable of rendering much nicer colored clear volumes. RGB multiplication in luxcore is a very rough model for spectrum filtering and it leads to notable oversaturation and color clipping. I really hope that spectral rendering could be ported to GPU or that there could be a better approximation for absorption.

I've seen on BlenderArtists and I think it's really great!! Both idea and CG quality.

The photo studio environment is real or modelled ??
Very clean renders...what about rendertimes? what about hardware used?

Thanks. I've mentioned the author of the studio 3D model in the youtube description, it's "photo studio objects" by nukkio. By the way, my own 3D models are available for download too:
As for the rendertimes, it's 0.5 … 2 hours per frame for a 32-core node and 4 … 16 hours for an 8-core. I used the resources of an high-performance computing center. Some of the frames were interpolated with slowmovideo.
