very nice :)

you're getting really good with lux, especially using the procedural system in such a way.
you should consider, if you have time, to write a tutorial or something. :)

can't wait to see the whole crown :)

I intend to do something like a 'making of' with focus on the material generation and associated workflow once I'm finished.

I learn a lot during this project, and this knowledge should be spread. Thats how I try to give a little bit back of what I received with this excellent software.

Beautiful work, wait to see your work completed!
Congratulations, I am convinced that it will be a very realistic scene. 8-)

Next update.

I had several restarts on the basic gold material and think I have settled now on a aetting which satisfies me.

See below a closeup of the pearl decorations on the main crown ring.

that looks nice. perhaps when your done you can also do some nice close-up shots or separated parts shots to show how much work you have put in it. :)
Cheers!

I plan to render the final image at a resolution of at least 2048x2048 ( maybe even higher) and see if I can crop some closeups from there. If not, some extra closeup shots would be nice, yes.

Hi,

It's most probably due to my bump map fix. But since it really fixes bump maps and bidir, it might be a bug in the subdiv code.

I guess this is an answer to my post in the 'luxrender user support subforum' about the weird subdivision behaviour.

Can I help in any way to resolve this issue ?

Next update.

I worked on the small lilies and on the relief on the mitra.

Actually this gave me quite a headache, as I ran into some strange bump mapping issues in combination with subdivision and uv mapping, where the unwrapped mesh extends beyond the limits of the mapped image. The effect is, that some part of the mesh gets bumpmapped and the other part too, but with totally different bumpmapping values :? . I will try to boil this down to a simple example and will post it later for discussion.

Another thing I do not really understand, is how the light intensity of mesh lights ( given in Watt and efficiency) and the lighting from an environment map correlate. I tried a map (st.peters cathedral) as hdr and ldr and always the intensity of the environment seems to by a factor ~100000 greater than that of the combined lights.

The light wattage is at around 600 Watt and I have to set the lights gain to 100 and the environment gain to 0.001 to have the meshlights as main lights. This strikes me as somewhat unnatural, as if I were in this cathedral with a 600 Watt lamp at very close range to the crown, I would see the light as main contributor to the overall lighting.

Here's an update with all the pieces done so far.
