Get your demo scenes here!

Postby paco » Thu Oct 06, 2011 4:44 am

---------------------------------------------
EDIT:

This thread is a place to put demo scenes that others can use to learn how to do things. So a simple scene demonstrating say the mix material, or how to use volumes, etc.

The scenes can be any form you want - ie a blend file, 3ds, whatever, just follow the guidelines further down. Ideally they should be plug 'n play so all textures should be included (make sure they're not copyright!). A .lxs file should also be included.

If the next few posts seem a bit confusing it's because this thread started out as a request for a central repository, and ended up becoming it :)

---------------------------------------------

It occurred to me that it would be quite useful to have some demo scenes for people to download and look at - like simple scenes that demonstrate the use of mix materials, mediums, lights, etc. Might save a bit of work in the forums and would be a quick way for people to get up and running.

I know there are some test scenes around but might be useful to have a more direct link (from homepage? in wiki? set up like the gallery?). Would need to know what version of lux the scene is compatible with, and other parameters (blender version, luxblend version, etc).

Not sure how much space it would take up or even if it's worth the effort but figured i'd ask and see what everyone else thought.

Hi,

The scenes repository can be referenced from the main site, so there's no problem creating a wiki page for example where those would be referenced. That's a good idea.

Yes, I agree that this is a good idea. I linked this example of a mix material three times now I think and it always helped until now :)

Would be great to have some scenes at one place, one with normalmaps, one with bumpmaps, one with particles, one with mix materials etc. (edit: portals, architectural glass2, absorption, ... :D )

Ok, here are the suggestions for what to include:

Given a filename like "bumpmapping" consider including :

1) .png / .jpg or whatever so people can see what it should look like
2) .zip or similar archive that is self contained, as well as a stub like:
--- _lxs for the raw lux file (includes all textures, etc) that should be openable by lux
--- _blend / _max etc for the relevant exporter/modeller packages

so for the bumpmap example you'd get:
"bumpmapping.jpg"
"bumpmapping_lxs.zip"
"bumpmapping_blend.zip"

The comment for the repo should include the verson of lux required (or changeset/date of build if dev) and the exporter/modeller files should include the versions of both the modeller and the exporter used.

Naturally all files will need to be public domain and size should be kept to a minimum.

EDIT: adjusted wording to make more sense as this now is the demo scene thread

Ok, so this topic is now sticky. The deal is that if more people say that they think a demo scenes subforum is a good idea then one will be created.

Hi,

No, the deal is that if the activity regarding demo scenes makes it unmanageable in a single thread a sub forum will be created.

Ah, in that case can we create a sticky thread with the title of "Place your demo scenes here" that has some of those basic requirements above? I'm happy to start the thread if you're happy to sticky it.

since no one seems to be using this, are there any other good sources for scenes?

I am sure in the gallery, there used to be the odd one where there would be a downloadable scene....but now that does not seem to be the case.
