LuxRender tries to only stop when the rendering effort is homogeneous over the whole image. If you use the lowdiscrepancy sampler with a high number of samples per pixel, it will only stop when reaching a multiple of that number which can take quite some time. With the v0.8RC4 version there was an over conservative check in metropolis that could cause huge delays when stopping, this should be much improved in recent weekly builds.
